HALLMARKING: Gold keeps climbing, silver lets the side down

Gold continued its upward trajectory in the month of October with a 22.1% rise in the number of articles hallmarked, totalling 115,815 overall. The figures, released by the Birmingham Assay Office using data collated from the four UK assay offices, showed that 9ct remained the strongest performer of all metal types in terms of volume, with the number of articles hallmarked rising 24.3% to 475,464. In an indication that pockets are getting slightly deeper amongst the buying public, 18ct gold also rose an impressive 26% from around 92,000 in October 2013 to 115,580 this year. The poor relation in this month's table was silver, which overall dropped by 3.8%, led by a 3.7% drop in sterling - traditionally the most popular category. However, it is thought that this could be due to slack created by the take-up of 18ct gold. In platinum, 950 rose by 3% to 24,898 items driving an overall platinum rise of 2.9%; and palladium rose 14.5% overall.
